"If the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail." True in many fields, doubly true when it comes to medical specialists.

Any tips on dealing with a situation where a primary care doctor suggests only a specialist within her/his hospital system? I think some patients feel almost guilty if they don't take the suggestion of their PCP, and that's often within their healthcare system.

That's a great question. If I were that patient, I would politely write down the suggestion and then ask if there are any additional specialists the primary care doctor recommends at other health care groups. The question I always ask is, "If I were your family (sister, brother, wife, husband, child) where would you send me?" I would also dig further if they say, oh anyone in that group is fine. And then of course research that specialist as recommended.

Smart and practical advice which I can use right away to get to a better diagnosis. Having the PCP as the air traffic controller among specialists could help steer me to better health, thanks Helene.
